11 Bianco di Custoza, I Classici, DOC Linea Val Dei Molini 12.5% £24.95 Zone of production: Veneto Grape variety: Tocai Friuliano, Garganega, Riesling Italico, Chardonnay & Trebbiano The grapes are harvested from 15 to 20 year old vines in vineyards located near Custoza. They are then fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks with partial malolatic fermentation. 90% of the wine is aged for 5 months in stainless steel tanks whilst the remaining 5% is aged for 5 months in 10hl barrels.A rich, full bodied wine with flavours of honeydew melon and other tropical fruits.

On the palate it has plenty of character with elegantly mineral elements. The acidity is well integrated with the fruit, making for a harmonious whole which is without a doubt one of the finest examples of this variety to be found anywhere on the planet.
27 Braide Alte Livon IGT 14% £62.90 Zone of production: Friuli Venezia Giulia Grape variety: Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Picolit & Ribolla Gialla The grapes are harvested by hand in boxes, then steeped in a cold horizontal press for eight hours and the must is cleaned through settling. The fermentation takes place in new Allier Barriques at controlled temperatures of 14°- 16°C. When the fermentation is over, the product remains in the same containers to mature for about eight months at a constant temperature. There follows a further long period of refining in the bottle before the wine is distributed.Intense straw yellow colour. Complex and elegant bouquet with hints of spices. This wine is one of the most awarded white wines of Italy, including the coveted three goblets from Gambero Rosso (one of Italy’s leading wine magazine). Vibrant aromas of citrus fruits, pineapple, pears & acacia flowers blend on the nose followed by a rounded palate with sweet hints of hazelnut.

32 Rosamara Chiaretto del Garda Classico Costaripa DOC 12.5% £29.95 Zone of production: Lombardia Carafe 425ml £18.75 Grape variety: Marzemino Glass 175ml £7.50 The wine of the knight, is a winemaking technique that requires the winemaker to be present for 24 hours, applying the tears method, which uses the core of the grape. The colour is pale candy pink. On the nose it is inviting, ample with a hint of mayflower. The taste is harmonious, fresh excellent persistence. One of the best rose wine from Italy and my favour.

36 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC 16% 50cl Bottle £65.00 Zone of production: Tuscany Grape Variety: Trebbiano & Malvasia Vin Santo has been made in Tuscany since at least medieval times & was probably named 'holy wine' because of its use during the Mass. The grapes are spread by hand on special straw mats in the appassitoio, a large, airy loft situated on the estate & left to dry until the end of December, when they are pressed. This wine has generous, complex aromas with hints of honey & dried fruit like apricots with a well-structured, pleasantly sweet & lingering flavour.

43 Valpolicella Superiore Zenato 13.5% £26.80 Zone of production: Veneto Grape variety: 80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella & 10% Sangiovese The manual harvesting of the grapes is followed by de-stemming and traditional maceration for a period of 10 days in stainless steel fermenters. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation, the wine is separated from the skins with gentle pressing and aged in 50/75 hectolitre oak casks for about 12 months.The wine has a ruby red colour, a delicate bouquet reminiscent of cherries and wild berries. The wine is full-bodied and dry with a velvety finish.

48 Ruris, Fattoria Colsanto IGT 13% £31.80 Zone of production: Umbria Grape variety: Sangiovese & Sagrantino The grapes are hand harvested and gently de-stemmed. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures of 23 degrees on the skins for 15 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs with 70% of the wine in barriques & 30% in steel tanks. Maturation follows the same structure for 10 months with some in barriques and some in steel.A deep ruby red colour. Fruity with strong hints of spice and aromas of vanilla and cocoa on the nose. Flavours of blackberries, blueberries on the palate. Soft tannins and a long finish.

The alcohol content makes the aromatic sensation ethereal and prolonged. In the mouth, the Vino Nobile is dry, lightly tannic which hints of vanilla and is beautifully balanced with a deep structure.

Our History, Our Land and Our Wines Italy is home to some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world and Italian wines are renowned worldwide both for their quality and for their broad variety. Italy shares with France the title of largest wine producer in the world, its contribution (about 45-50 million hl per year) representing about 1/3 of world production. Italian wine is exported around the world and is also extremely popular in Italy: Italians rank fifth on the world wine consumption list by volume with 42 litres per capita consumption. Grapes are grown in almost every region of the country and there are more than one million vineyards under cultivation. Etruscans and Greek settlers produced wine in Italy before the Romans started their own vineyards in the 2nd century B.C. Roman grape-growing and winemaking was prolific and well-organized, pioneering large-scale production and storage techniques like barrel-making and bottling Although vines had been cultivated from the wild Vitis vinifera grape for millennia, it wasn't until the Greek colonization that wine-making flourished. Viticulture was introduced into Sicily and southern Italy by the Mycenaean Greeks and was well established when the extensive Greek colonization transpired around 800 BC. It was during the Roman defeat of the Carthaginians (acknowledged masters of wine-making) in the 2nd century BC that Italian wine production began to further flourish. Large-scale, slave-run plantations sprang up in many coastal areas and spread to such an extent that, in AD 92, Emperor Domitian was forced to destroy a great number of vineyards in order to free up fertile land for food production. During this time, viticulture outside of Italy was prohibited under Roman law. Exports to the provinces were reciprocated in exchange for more slaves, especially from Gaul where trade was intense, according to Pliny, due to the inhabitants being besotted with Italian wine, drinking it unmixed and without restraint. It was customary to mix wine with a good proportion of water which may otherwise have been unpalatable, making wine drinking a fundamental part of early Italian life. As the laws on provincial viticulture were relaxed, vast vineyards began to flourish in the rest of Europe, especially Gaul (present day France) and Hispania. This coincided with the cultivation of new vines, like biturica (ancestor of the Cabernets). These vineyards became hugely successful, to the point that Italy ultimately became an import centre for provincial wines. Depending on the vintage, modern Italy is the world's largest or second largest wine producer. In 2005, production was about 20% of the global total, second only to France, which produced 26%. In the same year, Italy's share in dollar value of table wine imports into the U.S. was 32%, Australia's was 24%, and France's was 20%. Along with Australia, Italy's market share has rapidly increased in recent years.
